Terms:         Formative assessment is a type of assessment that gives the educator                                            Summative assessment is a type of assessment that identifies the
                                       a pulse of the students academic growth. The educator can then decide                                          mastery level of subject knowledge and understanding the context
                                       on the best action plan to facilitate student mastery of the material.                                                   in which this knowledge is contemplated.

                                     Remember - we can know a lot of things and not understand any of it. There is a distinct difference between knowledge and understanding.
Comparing some features of formative and summative assessment (Webber, 1999)

Formative

Summative
Identifies immediate problems
Measures learning over time
Occurs regularly
Measures final results after a longer period of time
Provides data on individual learning objectives
Often includes learning objectives over time
Demonstrates individual student progress.
Can be used to compare student performances
Measures one set of experiences.
Measures often include many units of study
